The short answer: Weekly Shonen Jump's little pirate mascot has two official names — "Journey" when you look at it normally (the eyepatch pirate), and "Jamie" when you rotate it 90° to the left, which reveals a hidden girl's face. It's an optical illusion by designer Masatoshi Furukawa. The pirate has ridden Jump's covers since the magazine launched in 1968, but went unnamed for over 50 years — fans just called it the "Jump Pirate" — until Shueisha finally revealed the names in Weekly Shonen Jump #27 in 2022.
The two names, in one look
For decades the mascot was simply the Jump pirate — a small, cheerful, eyepatch-wearing buccaneer tucked into the corner of the logo. In 2022 it got not one official name but two, because the design hides a second face:
- Journey — the pirate you see the normal way up. The name, per editor-in-chief Hiroyuki Nakano, is meant to evoke the adventure of Jump's characters and its readers.
- Jamie — rotate the same illustration 90 degrees counter-clockwise and the pirate's features resolve into a young girl wearing a hood marked with a Jolly Roger. That's Jamie.
It's a genuine optical illusion — reportedly a happy accident by illustrator Masatoshi Furukawa — which is exactly why it delighted fans when it was revealed.
Why is Shonen Jump's mascot a pirate?
Because Jump has always been about adventure. The pirate has appeared on the masthead since Weekly Shonen Jump's first issue in 1968, a shorthand for the swashbuckling, treasure-hunting spirit that runs through the magazine's biggest hits. It's fitting that Jump's defining modern series is a literal pirate epic (more on that below).
How it finally got a name (2022)
For most of its life the mascot was official art with no official name. Shueisha changed that with a public naming campaign in early 2022: fans submitted suggestions, the editorial team reviewed them, and the winning names were announced in Weekly Shonen Jump #27. Alongside the "Journey / Jamie" reveal, Jump leaned into a bit of playful lore — via Jump J Books, Jamie is framed as the younger "sister" to Journey's older "brother," a characterization tied to a 25th-anniversary celebration. Treat that part as fun canon rather than hard biography; the load-bearing facts are the two names and the rotate-to-reveal trick.
